On February 28th, BCCL organized Business Breakfast Briefing on Cryptocurrency and Blockchain with the record number of attendees.

The cryptocurrency boom has been the big news of 2017. In the end of 2017, the value of the crypt currency exceeded one hundred billion dollars. Lithuanians are very active in this area. We see a tendency that more and more Lithuanians do not run to Switzerland or Gibraltar, but perform their token sales in Lithuania. One of the speakers Elena Vėgėlytė covered the main legal risks on the one hand issuing tokens, on the other hand – buying and exchanging it.  She touched upon legal and tax treatment of transactions in cryptocurrencies and tried to identify tendencies for 2018. Elena Vėgėlytė is a tax lawyer at COBALT and also specializing in cryptocurrency transactions.

CEO of Blockchain Centre Vilnius Egle Nemeikstyte disclosed why Australian and Asian blockchain community chose Lithuania as their first gateway to Europe. She briefly covered the mission of the first international Blockchain Centre in Europe, connecting key stakeholders in Melbourne, Shanghai and, now, Vilnius. Eglė emphasized how Centre in Vilnius can help business to establish connections with blockchain market investors, startups, professionals; engage with regulators and policy makers, or bring together blockchain community.

Vytautas Kašėta, Board member of Blockchain Centre Vilnius, covered technological perspective of this new crypto economy paradigm. He took a deep look into the historical perspective of the blockchain technology reviewing when and why it began and where are we heading now. Vytautas overviewed major issues and possibilities of cryptography enabled distributed systems as well as technologies underlying the blockchain and cryptocurrencies.

Moderator of the event was Robert Juodka. The clear conclusion is – Lithuania has talents, infrastructure, the positive attitude by financial regulator and enough enthusiasm to shape Lithuania’s future. Thank you Mona Avik for pictures.
